Stage 1: Selection of Wool Fibre
The process begins with the meticulous selection of the wool, which is regarded as the very essence of every hand-woven rug. There are two categories of wool used: machine-spun and hand-spun. Unlike machine-spun wool, which can be easily purchased from shops, hand-spun wool must undergo a series of processes before it is dyed. Local sheep, which graze in the mountainous regions of northern Afghanistan, produce superior-quality, lustrous wool. Experienced shearers carefully collect the wool whilst taking the utmost care to ensure the animals’ welfare.
The wool is carefully left to dry in the sun in northern Afghanistan, where the air is dry and there is plenty of sunshine. This helps to remove moisture from the fibres. The wool is then sorted by hand to remove any impurities. Akça’s skilled local craftspeople use traditional spindles to spin these fibres into yarn. The resulting yarn is then gathered into loose bundles and prepared for dyeing, ensuring an even distribution on all sides.
Stage 2: The Painting Process
A separate dye vat is used for each colour. Bundles of yarn are immersed in large vats heated to approximately 200 degrees Celsius. By stirring the vat continuously for four hours, the dye is distributed evenly throughout the yarn, resulting in vibrant and captivating shades. Once the bundles have been dyed, they are left to dry completely in the sun.
Stage 3: The Weaving Process
The art of weaving brings rugs to life by transforming vibrant colours and intricate patterns into tangible creations. First, the designs are meticulously drawn onto graph paper marked in millimetres, which serves as a template for the rug patterns. A team of highly skilled weavers—comprising predominantly Turkmen women artisans from the Akça region of Afghanistan—bring these designs to life with their expert hands.
Every artisan we work with is provided with a loom, wool, weft yarn and all the equipment necessary to begin their work. The time taken to weave a rug can vary between 2 and 12 months, depending on its size and the complexity of the pattern, and requires dedicated effort from start to finish. This process combines patience, passion and precision, transforming every centimetre of the rug into an extraordinary masterpiece that tells a unique story.
Stage 4: Final Processing Stage
The final and most important step in the production of hand-woven rugs is the finishing process. This process involves an extremely thorough cleaning to ensure that newly woven rugs are free from any dirt or debris. The rugs undergo a careful dusting process using large cylindrical brushes. These wide brushes gently remove dust and debris without damaging the wool fibres. Subsequently, only water and natural soap are used for washing – harsh chemicals are never used.
Once the rugs have been thoroughly cleaned using a brush, great care is taken to ensure that every detail remains intact. To achieve a smooth and elegant surface, the edges of the rugs are carefully trimmed after being properly dried. A heat treatment is then applied to secure any loose ends and enhance the rug’s durability. To achieve a parallel and uniform appearance, the edges of the rugs are carefully aligned by placing them on a double-folded board and stretching them taut. This process helps to create even edges along the entire length of the rug.
As part of the final finishing touches, any superfluous or mismatched coloured knots are cut away. The fringes, meanwhile, receive specialist attention, undergoing precise cutting and tying techniques that prevent the knots from coming undone and contribute to an overall polished and coordinated appearance. As a final touch, the fringes are sometimes dyed to the desired colour to complement the rug’s design.
