Afghan rugs are produced using hand-weaving techniques with high-quality wool obtained from the long, soft fleece of sheep raised in cold mountain and arid climates. They typically feature geometric patterns along with floral and traditional motifs that carry the reflections of Afghan history. The best known of all Afghan rugs is the Khal Mohammadi. This singular combination of rich colours, completed by the perfect proportion of its geometric patterns, was first committed to design in the 1970s by the legendary master weaver Mr Khal Mohammad. Today Khal Mohammadi rugs come in a variety of pattern and colour combinations, while the original features the red obtained from the madder flower together with repeating star motifs. They have a fine knot size of between 40 and 50 knots per 10 centimetres, which gives them extra durability. Used correctly, such a rug will last for centuries.
