Afghan rugs are produced using hand-weaving techniques with high-quality wool obtained from the long, soft fleece of sheep raised in cold mountain and arid climates. Today Khal Mohammadi rugs come in a variety of pattern and colour combinations, while the original features the red obtained from the madder flower together with repeating star motifs. They have a fine knot size of between 40 and 50 knots per 10 centimetres, which gives them extra durability. Used correctly, such a rug will last for centuries.
